VAT/Sales Tax is something you might see applied during your cruise, however only in selected destinations or Itineraries where local authorities require it.
Due to various governmental statutory requirements, guests sailing on cruises calling Brazilian ports, USA Ports, as well as some within selected European Union ports are subject to the Value Added Tax (VAT), or sales tax, on purchases made in the gift shop, spa services and merchandise, and alcoholic beverages during their cruise.
Purchases subject to VAT or sales tax, as well as the amount of the VAT or sales tax varies by itinerary and venue, and is dictated solely by the local governments. Explorations by Norwegian remits 100% of all sums collected as VAT or sales tax to the local governments as required.
If Guests are not citizens of the European Union, they will have the opportunity to reclaim a portion of the VAT paid on certain merchandise purchased on board in our gift shop, subject to certain minimum purchase requirements. VAT charged on beverages and spa services is not eligible for reimbursement. For your convenience the VAT will be shown on your onboard receipts. The gift shop can issue non-EU guests a Global Blue refund receipt, which will assist you in claiming back EU VAT.
VAT & Sales Tax rates and requirements are at the discretion of the local governments of the countries, and are out of the control of Explorations by Norwegian.
